Dr. Kelly Resource Library Ribbon Cutting: A Celebration of Inclusion and Community Support

Dr. Kelly Resource Library Ribbon Cutting: A Celebration of Inclusion and Community Support

It all started with one iPad, for a participant who was trying to connect to virtual programs during the pandemic…

This simple beginning marked the inception of the Dr. Kelly Resource Library, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at providing access and support for individuals with special needs. On Saturday, February 10th, 2024, the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association (FVSRA) welcomed members of the community to celebrate the grand opening of this remarkable resource.

Located at the FVSRA office, the Resource Library boasts a diverse array of items available for check-out, ranging from recreational equipment like golf clubs and sports gear to sensory items such as weighted blankets and bubble tubes. Cutting-edge technology, including Virtual Reality headsets and iPads, is also on offer, ensuring that individuals of all abilities have access to enriching experiences.

The realization of this dream was made possible through the generous support of the Geneva Community Chest, whose contributions will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on countless lives for generations to come. Attendees were treated to a tour of the Sensory Room and delighted in a lively open house featuring bounce houses, a magician, balloon art, and face painting—a true celebration of inclusion and community spirit.

The highlight of the event was witnessing participants and families engage with the various resources available, from trying out VR headsets to experiencing the calming effects of body socks. What’s even more remarkable is that these items can be borrowed at no cost, thanks to the library’s commitment to accessibility.

Named in honor of the late Dr. William “Bill” Kelly, a dedicated advocate for individuals with special needs, the Resource Library stands as a testament to his legacy of compassion and generosity. Claire Howes, Superintendent of Recreation at FVSRA, eloquently captured the significance of this initiative, emphasizing that the library is not just a collection of resources but a beacon of hope for the community.

In her words, “They can try various equipment without the financial impact it may have, to figure out just the right weight of a pressure blanket, or will my child be able to tolerate the visual input of a virtual reality headset?” The Dr. Kelly Resource Library represents more than just a repository of items—it embodies a commitment to fostering social interaction, physical activity, creativity, and educational experiences for individuals of all abilities.

As the ribbon was cut and the doors of the Resource Library officially opened, it marked the beginning of a new chapter in the journey towards inclusivity and support for those with special needs. With boundless possibilities ahead, the Dr. Kelly Resource Library serves as a shining example of what can be achieved when communities come together to uplift and empower every individual, regardless of their challenges or abilities.
