Success at Special Olympic Summer Games
FVSRA competed in the 2017 Illinois Summer State Games in Bloomington-Normal June 9-11. Forty-four athletes represented FVSRA at the games. These athletes competed throughout the weekend in Gymnastics, Soccer, Bocce, Power-lifting, Track & Field, and Aquatics.
Staff and families gathered for an early morning send-off on Friday, with competition starting that afternoon. The Opening Ceremonies were held Friday night and is the official opening of the Summer State Games. Athletes recited the Special Olympics Oath, met new friends and spent the night dancing!
Competition continued on Saturday with success in every sport including Kim and Cindy taking first place in Bocce, Soccer winning the gold in triple overtime, and many athletes breaking their own Personal Records.
Saturday night, FVSRA hosted their annual pizza party to celebrate their accomplishments and relax with their friends. After filling up on pizza, the athletes headed to downtown Normal for the Victory Dance where they met up with friends from all agencies and danced the night away.
The weekend ended on Sunday as Track & Field and Power-lifting finished up their competition.
The weekend was a great success and a lot of fun for all the athletes who attended. The medal count at the end of the weekend was 35 Gold, 29 Silver, and 13 Bronze.
What a great weekend FVSRA Stars!
