Happy December! As the holiday lights go up around us and the weather gets colder, we know that the busy holiday season is nearing. As winter break approaches, families with special needs children may find themselves both excited and a bit anxious about the change in routine. Here are some tips to help make winter break enjoyable for everyone.
- Plan Ahead
Creating a visual schedule can help children understand what to expect each day. Include fun activities, family traditions, and downtime to ensure a balanced break. A social story is a learning tool that provides individuals with safe and meaningful information. Reading a social story together can help prepare your child for school off days, change in routine, and what to expect during the holidays.
- Maintain a Routine
While it’s tempting to let routines slide, maintaining a consistent sleep and meal schedule can grant a sense of stability. Keeping some elements of your daily routine familiar can provide structure and support. It is important to have a flexible plan.
- Engage in Sensory-Friendly Activities/Stay Active
Winter offers many sensory-friendly activities such as baking cookies, making crafts, or enjoying a quiet movie night. Choose activities that your child enjoys and that are calming. Below you will find a list of local activities as well as indoor options.
Local activity options:
- AMC offers sensory friendly films
- Studio Movie Grill offers special needs screenings
- We Rock the Spectrum: Indoor Gym
- DuPage Children’s Museum offers adaptive play times
- During a Field Museum visit, they offer sensory bags and Field Museum app to create customizable schedule
Indoor winter themed sensory activities:
- Prepare for Social Gatherings
If you plan to attend family gatherings or events, prepare your child in advance. Discuss who will be there, what activities will take place and create a plan for breaks if needed.
- Take Time for Yourself
Remember to take care of yourself too. Whether it’s a quiet cup of tea, a walk, or reading a book, self-care is essential for maintaining your energy and patience.

Every family has its unique challenges and triumphs. Celebrate the small victories and cherish the special moments that make this time of year magical.
