In-Person Athletic Skills
With this information and guidelines, FVSRA has made the decision to move forward under the umbrella of “FVSRA Athletics” and offer 4- week modified in-person sport skills programs. Please note that there will not be Special Olympic sanctioned competition related to participation in these programs. Sports will be conducted in a manner in which participants can maintain appropriate physical distance and will not involve the sharing of equipment.
FVSRA Athletic Skill programming may include the following sports:
Please note that participation in our modified in-person programs has updated requirements to ensure safe programming for athletes and staff. Important eligibility information and details on our safety protocols can be found on our website.
Special Olympics Programming Updates
Dear FVSRA Athletes and Families,
We have been missing participation in sports-related activities just as much as you have! Earlier this month, Special Olympics Illinois released a “return to activities plan” that provided some clarity as to the status of Special Olympics training and competition.
Phases 3-4 of the Restore Illinois Plan do not allow for all sports to be played or to be played without modification. Agencies such as FVSRA will decide what sports and activities to offer based on their circumstances. The following sports were listed in their plan:
•Golf – both individual skills and stroke play
•Tennis both individual skills and match play
•Softball individual skills
•Soccer individual skills
As of now, no decisions have yet been made by Special Olympics regarding the remaining 2020 sports and state tournaments. Special Olympics let us know a tentative time that decisions for the following sports would be made:
•Volleyball, Unified soccer, and Flag football: Early August.
•Bowling and Floor Hockey: Early to mid-September.
•Region Bocce Tournament: mid-august. If postponed, they would be held in the spring for entry into 2021 Summer Games.
Special Olympics did not address the status to timeline of when decisions would be made for Basketball, Aquatics, or Gymnastics. We will be sure to communicate updates once we are notified.
